Martin Helmchen is one of today’s most sought-after pianists, admired for the originality, intensity, tonal sensitivity, and technical finesse of his interpretations. He has performed on the world’s leading stages for more than two decades and received the Gramophone Classical Music Award in 2020.
Helmchen has appeared with many of the world’s great orchestras, including the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonic, Concertgebouworkest, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Staatskapelle Dresden, Orchestre de Paris, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, and The Cleveland Orchestra. He regularly works with conductors such as Herbert Blomstedt, Christoph von Dohnányi, Alan Gilbert, Paavo Järvi, Vladimir Jurowski, Fabio Luisi, Klaus Mäkelä, Andris Nelsons, and Kazuki Yamada.
A devoted chamber musician, Helmchen collaborates frequently with Marie-Elisabeth Hecker, Frank Peter Zimmermann, Julian Prégardien, Augustin Hadelich, and Antje Weithaas, and appears at major festivals including the BBC Proms, Schubertiade, Lucerne, Marlboro, and Aspen. He co-directs the Fliessen International Chamber Music Festival with Hecker.
Born in Berlin, Helmchen studied with Galina Iwanzowa and Arie Vardi. He won the Clara Haskil Competition in 2001 and the Credit Suisse Young Artist Award in 2006, teaches at Kronberg Academy, and records for Alpha Classics.
